OCTOBER UPDATE:
Celebrating 10 years of the Voice BNYG!!! Thanks to everyone who helped us celebrate. To those who have been a part (big or small) of the voice over the years. Thanks for your support, love, prayers, friendship, laughter and sharing of faith journey's together. We cannot wait to see what the next ten (hopefully many more) years to come offer.
THE VOICE BNYG YOUTH UPDATE:
WOW! Super sorry there hasn’t been any updates up on the website for so long. We are still going strong and growing as a youth group. So what has been going on you may ask? Well so far this year we have held a youth leaders retreat down at Marian Valley for a few days in January. This was a great time to reflect and rejuvenate for the New Year. We continue to have youth mass on each first and second Sundays of the month(more info below) and on the third Sunday a group of us go to the Ignite mass (PLEASE NOTE: the IGNITE venue has now changed to Villanova College – Cooparoo).
This year we also continued the tradition of the youth Lenten Retreat overnight on Palm Sunday weekend. This was a successful event, with a great outdoor Stations of the Cross and Earth hour adoration in conjunction with the parish Social Justice Group. Throughout the night, people were able to sit at faith or prayer stations around the room where they could either learn something new, say a prayer, or listen to a video/recording on certain topics, so that we were all able to learn something new and grow in our faith.
BNYG had the honour of leading the singing for the April leaven hour! The youth have recently also had a suburb of origin day where we split of into teams from Banyo (green) and Nundah (gold) and competed against each other in a series of team building and seriously competitive challenges. Great fun was had by all.
April Update:
This month the youth has been busy developing fundraising ideas and goals for our future endeavors.
The March Lenten Retreat was fantastic yet again, with everyone growing in their understanding and appreciation of the Catholic faith. The night began with prayers, big buddy, little buddy reflections and activities and the Stations of the Cross around the garden, which deepened our understanding of what Lent and Easter are truly about. Many of us stayed the night and spent hours in the presence of the Lord at Adoration. the following morning we awoke and after more personal reflection attended the 7:30 mass as a youth group.
On Saturday the 20th of April the focus of Inflame (our regular youth gathering) was Vocations, since it was Vocations Sunday the next day. A representative from the Brisbane Vocation Centre, came to talk to us about the importance of discerning your vocation, be it single, married, religious life or the Priesthood. His talk was very informative and entertaining with relevant clips to support and provide depth to the talk helping everyone to understand vocations fully and begin for some, their own discernment process.
There are plenty of things still to come for us in the months ahead - we are expanding slowly, and finding new ways to help out in the church community.

Samoa:
Well.....we are back! About 4 weeks ago, we arrived back to Australia; back to the comfort of our beds, the abundance of our pantries and our seemingly overcrowded homes. The 20 young missionaries and their parents could not have fathomed that the 17 days spent in Samoa would truly transform them from the inside out. With the help of the Holy Spirit and the abounding prayers sent for us, this Mission journey could only be described as a blessing from beginning to end!
From the moment we gathered for our final end of year concert fundraiser, each participant giving devotedly of their time and talents, to this very moment, we knew that the Samoa Youth Mission Project, 2013 was going to become a reality. With their sights set on the goal of refurbishing St. Mary's Catholic College, in Apia, Samoa, as part of the ongoing disaster relief following the 2009 Tsunami as well as the recent Cyclone Evan, the young missionaries were equipped not only with the raw resources and funds to fulfil the practicalities of the mission, but more so equipped with hearts ablaze with the love of Christ.
In preparation for this Mission, spanning a five-year period, there was prayer, hard work, endurance, challenges, temptations to give up/in, reflection, giving of time and talents, formation, fundraising, early mornings, late nights, hours in Adoration and a deeper and deeper hunger for the Eucharist in the Mass. As you can see, the youth of today have great capacity and ability to be missionaries, only once equipped with Christ! In the words of St Mary Mackillop, the Banyo-Nundah Youth Group continue to aim to "Never see a need, without doing something about it!". Inflamed by the experience in Samoa, we continue to set our sights on continued mission work, whether it be in our own homes or in places where we can help provide resources for those in need.
Each missionary's eyes and hearts were no doubt opened wider to the need for sharing of resources to help our brothers and sisters in need. I know for myself, I was overwhelmed by the generosity of the Samoans, despite the little they had, we were welcomed with feasts, gifts, warm smiles, genuine embraces and fellowship (despite the language barrier)! The unity of the Catholic faith opened my eyes to that Communion in Christ's Body which he yearns for us to share in. The magnificence of many of their churches are a reflection of the love of God they share with such vitality and exuberance- I wondered at how ironic this was, that they have so little material wealth and yet invest much of it in their heavenly Kingdom, while in Australia, such extravagance is often reserved only for Cathedrals or Basilicas. One of our mothers summed it up quite well, reporting how her son had put it "they live in a small world and we live in a big world - not "small" meaning they know little or aren't as important, but "small" in that they don't need much to be satisfied" with the little they have, making themselves humble in order that God may be glorified!
These 17 days were action-packed to say the least and so no mere words could describe the blissful moments of camaraderie, sister/brotherhood, joy and the dreaded farewell. We do know for sure though, that we grew closer to knowing what Christ meant by, "love one another, just as I have loved you!". Let's not hesitate to be Christ's hands and feet in the world!

June Update
Real Talk
On Friday 15 June, Paul Ninnes and Kym Keady spoke to members of the BNYG as well as other young adolescents - about 18 youth all together - about God’s plan for us in life.
They talked to us about their difficulties when they were in high school, their experience during rough relationships and their journey back to their faith. They also delved into what we believe as Catholics and about respecting ourselves and each other.
In this session I learnt that God really does forgive every sin. If you ask, you shall receive. There are certain things in life that we should keep as chastity and to wait for the gift of life - not to search for it outside of marriage.
The first time you do something you remember it well, the second time and the third time it slowly wears off. During the Real Talk session we also were taught lots more things that will stay with us forever - like if you have done something bad, you can be mad at yourself but don’t say that you are a bad person. In other words, respect yourself. Michael Greathead
Parish Dinner Dance
Above: Parish youth at the Dinner on 10th June taking a break from providing the entertainment
Thank you to all those who attended the Parish Dinner Dance and supported our performances with your applause and generosity. It brought joy to our hearts to see the enjoyment on your faces. Thank you also for the generosity of spirit and the donations you contributed on the night to help us on our journey to Samoa.
Congratulations to all the young people who took the time and effort to practice and prepare. You are truly exemplars of what it means to be a true disciple of Christ in everything you do!! The parish are blessed to have such a dedicated, talented and generous group of young leaders.
“My learning from the Samoan dance that we can all be united as one, no matter where we are from. We are all the same in the eyes of our Lord, Jesus. The dance has taught me the culture of the Samoans and it helped me understand that each of us are unique not superior of each other. Within the dance it taught me grace, peace and unity with my fellow youth group members. I showed myself that an American, Australian, Samoans and Hispanics can be united with others through Christ.” Anna Boland

Youth For Youth Mass
As you may have noticed, the youth group runs bi-monthly youth masses where we take part in as many aspects of the mass as possible. This means that young
people are giving the readings, altar serving and providing the music. It is with the music at mass that we need help. We are looking for young people to join in the choir to sing at mass, and also any young musicians that can help us by playing a musical instrument. If you are interested in helping out in any way, please contact us!
March Update:
Many of us attended the Catholic Guy Event in the last few weeks. Bridget Greathead was one of us who attended every session:
"Well… what can I say, the four consecutive nights starting at 7:30 till 9: 00 were both spiritually inspiring and eye-opening? I am sure that any one who attended the nights would definitely agree. Bruce Downes analogies on being a Catholic in our society today gave me an idea of the way that God can influence our lives and how we can help God by being open to all the seeds of ideas that he plants within us.
With beautiful reflective music the activities carried out by everyone willing enabled us to let go of our problems and allowed us to physically and mentally reflective on our faith, give these problems to God so that we could be guided though them. So thankyou to the Catholic guy team and the parish team and most definitely Father Paul for making the mission possible, for I believe it was indeed a most revolutionary, inspiring experience."
-By Bridget Greathead
Bridget also did well winning $2,500 from the RSL. After writing an essay and answering numerous questions, Bridget received an R.S.L. Youth Development Program Community Grant of $2 500 to help with the costs of SYM 13. The grant is run by the RSL and Bond University and aims to help Queensland youth in their Academic, Sporting and Community activities.

April Update
Market Day
Building on the success of our garage sale, we held a Market Day on 15th April. It rained. mmm. However, we persevered and raised $1,600 with the generosity of the Banyo and Nundah communities. A big thank you to our brave stall holders who still turned up and supported us. Thanks again to BuzzPrint for providing us with flyers to distribute before the day. If you need printing, give Buzz Print a call on 07 3267 6666, www.buzzprint.com.au.
Mother's Day Raffle
We are running a Mother's Day Raffle of beautiful vintage reproduction rosary beads, donated by Anne Cramer of Tota Pulchra Beads . If you would like to buy a ticket, please see one of the youth group members after Mass on the weekends leading up to Mother's Day or contact us.
Online Donations Up and Running for PedalYak for Samoa.
See the bright red button at the top of this page? That's our new online donation facility for PedalYak for Samoa, our next big fundraiser. See our PedalYak for Samoa page for more information. Join in, get fit, enjoy the beautiful winter weather in Brissy, walk or ride by yourself or with a friend and raise funds to help us support Literacy and Education in Samoa.
